Good-byes

Life is full of hellos and good-byes, and so to begin this new adventure, we decide that a Hello/Goodbye party would be just perfect for Kelly and I.  It was a wonderful way for me to say farewell to so many friends and loved ones and a way for Kelly to meet many new faces.

The party made me realize even more so, what a life-swap this is.  Kelly and I will depend upon each other's friends and family members to help us find our way and help us make a home away from home.  I realized even more-so how incredibly blessed I am not only to have so many friends and family supporting me along my journey, but supporting Kelly through her journey as well.  They have welcomed her with open arms, just as I expected them to, and I know they will look out for her throughout the year.  For that, and for so many other things, I am incredibly thankful.

I am so excited about my trip, and eager for the journey to begin.  For months, this seemed so far away and now, I'm on the eve of my "set-sail" day.  I know I'm ready, and in all honesty, I'm not very nervous, and I have no doubt that once I get on the plane there will only be excitement that overcomes me, but right now, it is hard to say good-bye.  And thankfully with the miracles of communication, I'll even be in close contact with everyone, can you imagine when people used to set sail never knowing if they'd see or hear from their loved ones again?  That is a bravery that I cannot even begin to fathom!

Tomorrow, I set sail on my own adventure, leaving behind loved ones that enrich my life in countless ways.  I'm so very thankful for each and everyone of them and so very thankful that I'll be able to keep in touch.

Next time you hear from me, I'll be settling into my new home across the pond!

    I miss you already! But I can't wait to hear all about your adventures. Our little group will miss you dearly...you know you always bring us up a notch or two with your sunny disposition and your service to humanity!

    Sounds like you and Kelly have had a nice time together! The goodbye parts are definitely hard, but you have a great attitude about this grand adventure! Have a safe flight and see you soon!!!

Round Abouts, One Lane Roads, and Clutches - Oh My!

The day after I arrived here in Woburn Sands, I took a couple of short trips around the area at times when there were few cars around.  I did alright, but the thought of driving 5 hours north in just a few days time was quite daunting.  Still, my stubbornness won out on me knowing that if I didn't go ahead and do it, it would become even more difficult for me. On the Saturday after my arrival, my new found friend, and fellow Fulbrighter, JJ arrived.  I was a little nervous about venturing into the outskirts Milton Keynes, so I woke up early and went for a test run to make sure I'd know where to go and how to maneuver the round-abouts.  I did really well, and was so pleased with myself when I went back to pick JJ up that I wasn't paying careful attention and took the wrong exit on the round about on our way home.  The great thing was though, that I was able to follow signs to nearby places and make it home!   JJ and I set out on Sunday morning to Nottingham and She

Tis the season... to bake!

Even being thousands of miles from the food celebrations that will happen this week, I somehow got the "it's time to cook" bug this Thanksgiving week!  This past weekend I made about 4 recipes worth of sausage and cheese balls (which have been a huge hit here!) to put in the freezer for upcoming celebrations and to share with others.  I'm also baking some more cookies to share on Thanksgiving day, so I made the dough for that tonight to start the process.  And last, but certainly not least, I made my grandmother's sausage biscuits. They are nothing all too complicated, these pinwheel biscuits, but oh they are delicious.  I know they are tasty, but I also know that one of the main reasons I love them so much is because I always think of her when I make them.  I was only nine when she passed away, and so unfortunately many of the memories I have of her have faded.  I don't think the smell of those homemade biscuits wafting up the stairs is something I could re
