More Thoughts on Americans

On this snowy Saturday morning, I'm curled up on the couch enjoying reading through some of this term's American Studies surveys.  Since yesterday was my last day with the group of kids that I've had for the past term, I decided to give them a small survey to see what sorts of things they learned.  It's a good way to help me prepare for the next term, and also they are quite entertaining for me!

Some of my favorite answers:

What is something interesting you learned about America that you did not know before?
They put peanut butter on everything (mostly cookies).
They mostly deep fry all of the food.
They have Ground Hog Day every year.
How to play American football.
I learned how extreme the weather can be and that it isn't always warm.
I learned about Helen Keller and that was really interesting.
I learned why there are 50 stars and 13 stripes on the flag.
They have faces that are famous on dollars.
War Eagle is cool.
They can't speak English.
They are a lot of fat but some are medium.
The fun dancing.
They love peanut butter.
When there is a tornado, the safest place is in the bath.
Dancing (heel, heel, toe, toe, heel, toe, inside, outside)

Have your views about America changed since the beginning of the class?
Yes, they are very nice and kind (more than I thought) and understanding.
Yes, America sounds fun.
Yes, I think they are good people towards the world.
Yes, I thought that people were all quite rich.  But I realize that they are just like us.
Not all American men are fat.
Yes, I now know more about the country than Hollywood and New York.
I thought America was there before the UK.
No, because I have always liked America and I still adore it.

Is there anything (besides food) that we did not talk about that you wanted to learn about?
Why don't Americans like Canadians?
Gangs/ Street Crime

For the most part the kids reported their favorite lessons as the ones about American football (which they played in PE this week) and the line dances I taught them.  Perhaps when I leave, there will be a little spot in England where people shout "War Eagle" and do the "Cotton-Eyed Joe."  That will truly be a legacy to leave behind! :)
