Lions, Monkeys and Friends, Oh My!

This morning I woke up, straightened the house and headed to Heathrow Airport.  As it is a holiday weekend, traffic was VERY slow and I ended up arriving at the arrivals gate soon after my friends arrived, but nevertheless, today, I got to welcome four great friends from my college days.  Emily, Blair, Amanda and I are all sorority sisters, meeting eleven years ago soon after going through recruitment at Auburn University.  Brian, Amanda's husband is a great sport and traveling with the girls this week, too!  I'm so excited that they are here for we always make wonderful memories together and spend much of our time bent over laughing.

My goal today was to keep the gang awake until a reasonable time to go to bed, so that they could get a good night sleep and wake up on the right time zone.  I wanted to find something that would keep them entertained, but not be too vigorous nor too informational.  The drive through safari park seemed like the perfect combination!

When I had gone before with friends, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, but it was crowded, so we couldn't really move at our own pace and the animals were a bit inactive.  Today, was perfect!  We arrived late in the afternoon on a perfectly sunny day to find near-empty roads with animals that were eager to entertain.  The black bears and wolves got very close to the car, slowly meandering around their habitats.  Many of the lions were sleeping, stretching and rolling about, soaking up the warm sunshine, but a few of them got up and wandered amongst the cars, reminding us just how large and mighty they are.






The cheeky monkeys were incredibly active today, leaping from car to car, chasing one another up, over and around the cars.  They were so much fun to watch!  And what an experience!  How many of us can say that we've had monkeys sitting on our rearview mirrors?

After a walk around the zoo and a meal at the pub, we are all ready for bed!  But what a great first day of our week of adventures!

Another Adventure!

I haven't posted on this blog in ten years.  It is beyond my comprehension that it has been ten years since my life-changing experience through the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program.  Thankfully, I've had many travel opportunities since this time (they are over on this blog  if you want to see more), but as far as traveling professionally, well, I haven't done a lot of that in a while. Round Abouts, One Lane Roads, and Clutches - Oh My!

The day after I arrived here in Woburn Sands, I took a couple of short trips around the area at times when there were few cars around.  I did alright, but the thought of driving 5 hours north in just a few days time was quite daunting.  Still, my stubbornness won out on me knowing that if I didn't go ahead and do it, it would become even more difficult for me. On the Saturday after my arrival, my new found friend, and fellow Fulbrighter, JJ arrived.  I was a little nervous about venturing into the outskirts Milton Keynes, so I woke up early and went for a test run to make sure I'd know where to go and how to maneuver the round-abouts.  I did really well, and was so pleased with myself when I went back to pick JJ up that I wasn't paying careful attention and took the wrong exit on the round about on our way home.  The great thing was though, that I was able to follow signs to nearby places and make it home!   JJ and I set out on Sunday morning to Nottingham and She

Tis the season... to bake!

Even being thousands of miles from the food celebrations that will happen this week, I somehow got the "it's time to cook" bug this Thanksgiving week!  This past weekend I made about 4 recipes worth of sausage and cheese balls (which have been a huge hit here!) to put in the freezer for upcoming celebrations and to share with others.  I'm also baking some more cookies to share on Thanksgiving day, so I made the dough for that tonight to start the process.  And last, but certainly not least, I made my grandmother's sausage biscuits. They are nothing all too complicated, these pinwheel biscuits, but oh they are delicious.  I know they are tasty, but I also know that one of the main reasons I love them so much is because I always think of her when I make them.  I was only nine when she passed away, and so unfortunately many of the memories I have of her have faded.  I don't think the smell of those homemade biscuits wafting up the stairs is something I could re
