Fairy Cakes

Tomorrow we are having a special "Race at Your Place" event. Race for Life, very similar to Relay for Life, is happening all over the country this time of year raising money for cancer research. As an extra fund raiser, we're having a cake sale. At home a bake sale is made up of mainly cookies and some cupcakes. Here, a cake sale mainly consists of fairy cakes. Now, I have no idea why they are called fairy cakes, but perhaps it would be fun to make up a reason, so let's just go with the idea that the fairies come into the kitchen at night and sprinkle magic dust on them!:)

Fairy cakes are a very basic cupcake recipe, so people were very surprised when I said I had never made them. The year 5s make them in the food classroom at school, so I decided I could too! So with a dash of my own flavor and homemade pink buttercream icing, I made my very first batch of fairy cakes! Let's hope the fairies stop by tonight to add their magic touch!;)

Round Abouts, One Lane Roads, and Clutches - Oh My!

The day after I arrived here in Woburn Sands, I took a couple of short trips around the area at times when there were few cars around.  I did alright, but the thought of driving 5 hours north in just a few days time was quite daunting.  Still, my stubbornness won out on me knowing that if I didn't go ahead and do it, it would become even more difficult for me. Good-byes

Life is full of hellos and good-byes, and so to begin this new adventure, we decide that a Hello/Goodbye party would be just perfect for Kelly and I.  It was a wonderful way for me to say farewell to so many friends and loved ones and a way for Kelly to meet many new faces. The party made me realize even more so, what a life-swap this is.  Kelly and I will depend upon each other's friends and family members to help us find our way and help us make a home away from home.  I realized even more-so how incredibly blessed I am not only to have so many friends and family supporting me along my journey, but supporting Kelly through her journey as well.  They have welcomed her with open arms, just as I expected them to, and I know they will look out for her throughout the year.  For that, and for so many other things, I am incredibly thankful. The Second Day of School

What a difference a day makes!  Today was not a perfect day, but it was a much better day, and I have no doubt that each day will help me to feel more and more comfortable in my new "shoes." This morning, after checking in with my little lost ones and making sure they knew where to go, I had my Year 6 English class for two class periods, so one hour and forty minutes.  Yesterday, I had them during the fire alarm, so there was very little time to spend with them.  I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them today!  They were attentive, hard working, kind, curious and very bright - what a joy!  I felt better too.  I knew what had and had not worked from the previous day, and I felt very confident in the material I taught today.  I did things with them that I enjoy doing at home like bringing them to the floor to read a story and doing the Hokey Pokey after they had been sitting for a while (by the way, they said the US version of the Hokey Pokey was much more fun).  It was a wonde
