Year 5 Derbyshire Trip in Pictures

Conker's Discovery Park not only had wonderful activities for the children, but also some adorable little babies!
This little lady was one of my favorites because she looked like this most of the time with her eyes closed and hissing at us.  I asked the "bird lady" about the owl, wondering if she was just old and craggy.  As it turns out, she is like this all the time.  Apparently, she was raised in a kitchen and feels that whenever she sees people, she should be fed!

This lovely lady was the youngest in the bunch.  I believe she thought she was hiding behind her post.

"Catching" a falcon

I have ridden toboggans in New Zealand, Austria, and now England!  They are so much fun!

The teachers, of course, took full advantage of the fun as well!


This little penguin was at the Twycross Zoo.  After watching her bathe for a few minutes, one of my pupils said, "Miss Smith, what is that, some sort of little seal?"


After watching the prairie dogs for a few minutes, one of my kiddos said, "If there is some sort of after life, I want to come back as one of them!"

I truly enjoyed making discoveries in this fascinating country, right alongside my pupils.

Round Abouts, One Lane Roads, and Clutches - Oh My!

The day after I arrived here in Woburn Sands, I took a couple of short trips around the area at times when there were few cars around.  I did alright, but the thought of driving 5 hours north in just a few days time was quite daunting.  Still, my stubbornness won out on me knowing that if I didn't go ahead and do it, it would become even more difficult for me. On the Saturday after my arrival, my new found friend, and fellow Fulbrighter, JJ arrived.  I was a little nervous about venturing into the outskirts Milton Keynes, so I woke up early and went for a test run to make sure I'd know where to go and how to maneuver the round-abouts.  I did really well, and was so pleased with myself when I went back to pick JJ up that I wasn't paying careful attention and took the wrong exit on the round about on our way home.  The great thing was though, that I was able to follow signs to nearby places and make it home!   JJ and I set out on Sunday morning to Nottingham and She

Good-byes

Life is full of hellos and good-byes, and so to begin this new adventure, we decide that a Hello/Goodbye party would be just perfect for Kelly and I.  It was a wonderful way for me to say farewell to so many friends and loved ones and a way for Kelly to meet many new faces. The party made me realize even more so, what a life-swap this is.  Kelly and I will depend upon each other's friends and family members to help us find our way and help us make a home away from home.  I realized even more-so how incredibly blessed I am not only to have so many friends and family supporting me along my journey, but supporting Kelly through her journey as well.  They have welcomed her with open arms, just as I expected them to, and I know they will look out for her throughout the year.  For that, and for so many other things, I am incredibly thankful. The Second Day of School

What a difference a day makes!  Today was not a perfect day, but it was a much better day, and I have no doubt that each day will help me to feel more and more comfortable in my new "shoes." This morning, after checking in with my little lost ones and making sure they knew where to go, I had my Year 6 English class for two class periods, so one hour and forty minutes.  Yesterday, I had them during the fire alarm, so there was very little time to spend with them.  I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them today!  They were attentive, hard working, kind, curious and very bright - what a joy!  I felt better too.  I knew what had and had not worked from the previous day, and I felt very confident in the material I taught today.  I did things with them that I enjoy doing at home like bringing them to the floor to read a story and doing the Hokey Pokey after they had been sitting for a while (by the way, they said the US version of the Hokey Pokey was much more fun).  It was a wonde
